hey thanks again guys..
I DO have that Gary Chaffee book.. one of my favs, though it kicks my butt.. I took your guys advice and am playing down Pg. 16 between 20-60bpm being very consious of stick height, note placment and dynamics. I've also been keeping boht 1/4 and 1/8th note pulse on my feet while doing this as a way of internalizing the pulse.. do you think this is a good idea.. as well as the counting outloud part..

I will start by saying that I agree that you are (would have to be) brave to post your practice (if you can call it that) session on here. Having said that and at the risk of being classed as 'harsh', 'unfair' or whatever, why did you do it?
It is clear that you simply sat down at your kit and trotted out all the random, unconnected, un-musical grooves and licks that you have learnt. They have nothing to do with MUSIC. What were you thinking of at the time? "I'll bust out a few chops and they will be really impressed?" "I'm sure to get some positive feedback from this?".
In my opinion and I am only being honest and telling it as I hear it, the playing was sloppy, the TIME was shocking and generally what I heard was very forgetable and totally un-moving. Not one bit made me sit up and think "nice!".
This forum is fantastic and the views expressed and the posts/vids/mp3's that are shared are really generous and make me proud to be a part of such a wicked drumming community. Having said that, ocassionally, you have to risk offending people and give your opinions from the heart, without feeling the need to write "in my (humble) opinion" everytime you think that someone may be offended by what you have to say. We're all grown people, why apologise for giving your views?
I'm a professional working drummer in England and would never be so arrogant as to post MY playing on here for people to enjoy/comment on/slate/whatever. Every time I sit behind my drums I OPEN MY EARS and play/react to the MUSIC that is happening around me. This mp3 is nothing but sloppy, uninspired playing. It's played at one level - loud! For god's sake, sort out your TIME first and THEN concentrate on the 'flash' stuff. Have you heard of a gentleman called Steve Gadd? He gets paid thousands of dollars for doing practically nothing! We can ALL play the simple grooves that he plays, but it's the FEEL, HEART and SOUL with which he plays it.
And as for the thread about Vinnie...... Jeezuz!! Pots and kettles!!!

chop: When you show up on HOD and blast somebody in this way, you open yourself up to criticism. So here goes:
First, Josiah stated WHY he posted his mp3: to learn. He's gotten plenty of USEFUL feedback from others.
Second, in 500 words, your only constructive comment was 'work on your time'. Well, yes, we ALL should.
Third, I'd like to hear more samples from HODers! I love listening to drums -- good, bad, or ugly. And speaking of ugly...
At the risk of appearing 'arrogant' or 'un-musical', I give a link to a studio recording of mine from 1989. Believe me, my drumming SUCKS compared to Josiah's! But I think the song and concept is cool. I've always wondered how much better it'd sound with a GOOD drummer behind the kit. Enjoy (or not)...

Just my two cents...
IMHO, I think its great to have posts of other HOD members' playing... what a great way to get feedback and LEARN from constructive opinions. It brings yet another dimension to this forum that I think is excellent for our drumming community... IMHO

Chipchop: I'm afraid your comments are WAY out of line. I think Josiah was interested in getting constructive feedback on his playing, and perhaps some deserved complements and words of encouragement. I don't think Vinnie or Dave or Steve Smith would rip someone apart as you did (now Virgil's another story...but I digress).
I've been on the HOD board for about two years. Criticizing pro musicians has been an area of "spirited" debate on this board, and I don't see a problem with that. However, personally ripping another HOD member is not what this board is about.
Josiah: Just ignore Chipchop's (if that is indeed his real name) comments. We all know that the rest of HOD members don't stoop to that level.
I agree that it's cool to hear drumming by people other than Vinnie, Dave or Virgil. There are a lot of lesser-known/unknown musicians out there with lots of talent.
Oh, and a quick reply to No_Bells...I understand that an appreciation for true jazz drumming is an acquired taste, and I certainly appreciate it now more than 10 or even 5 years ago. I also stated that I dig quite a bit of Jack's playing. That said, I stand behind my comments regarding his performance that night. I was not expecting a Virgil/Vinnie-esque display of fireworks (which is not the only style I enjoy), but I was not expecting an incoherent sequence of noises either. I don't mean to cut down Jack, but I would have been embarassed to get on stage and do a solo like that.

since a million guys can throw chops all day, the reason we all know who vinnie is, in a word, is his musicality.
so, it will be your unique, well-developed, passionate, dedication to a sense of MUSICALITY that will enable you to emerge from that pool of a million guys throwing mad chops. The pursuit of chops will not put you in the consciousness of drumming like john bonham, tony williams, buddy rich, steve gadd, terry bozio, jack dejohnette, billy cobham, peter erskine, keith moon, max roach, steve smith, ringo star, elvin jones and vinnie colaiuta.
nice mp3. takes a lot of guts.
